Successful Network Marketers

Have you experienced the desperate network marketer? I’m sure you have. He’s the guy who runs up to you and just dumps his spiel on you, usually before he’s even introduced himself. On Twitter she’s the one who has the automated tweet about her opportunity that posts every 15 minutes or so. When you look at her posts, all you see is an endless list of the same message over and over. If you happen to friend one of them on Facebook then they will fill you inbox.

About the only thing you can be thankful for with these people is knowing that they will never succeed the way they are going and will eventually disappear. Or maybe they will change opportunities and vomit their new business on you. Their desperation is almost overpowering.

Fortunately not all network marketers are that way, although the desperate ones may make you think they must be. From my experience, the successful network marketers are not overbearing at all. I met two of the top earners in my company last year and you couldn’t meet nicer, more easy-going people.

The important thing to remember about network marketing is that it is a real business. The problem comes from the fact that most people in network marketing have never been trained on how to run a business. They then spend their time marketing their business opportunity to more people who also have never been trained. People are brought in with promises of getting rich quick while working from home. The stories they hear are about the people who are making $100,000 a month or became overnight successes.

One of the top earners that I mentioned a moment ago shared something with me when we met. Yes, he did start making a nice amount of money right away when he joined this company. He was able to do that because he had been in several other network marketing companies before and new a lot of people who were also experienced in network marketing. While he was success immediately with this company, he wasn’t immediately successful in network marketing. It takes time to learn how build a business and build a team of people who understand what they are doing.

Like I said, network marketing is a real business and it takes time to build one. You have to get the word out that your business exists. You have to cultivate prospects, leads, customers, and new distributors. You have to learn how to talk to people. When a new distributor joins the team, they have to be properly trained and you need to make sure that they have realistic expectations. They need to know that they probably aren’t going to become an Ultra Supreme Royal Diamond Whatever on their first day, their first month, or likely during their first year.

So, to be successful in network marketing you need to understand that you are building a business, that it will take time, and be comfortable with yourself and what you are doing. Desperation shows and will drive people away. It doesn’t present success.

Niche Marketing

All of the internet marketing experts I have read lately are talking about niche marketing, that to be successful you have to focus on a niche. The same thing really goes for face-to-face marketing too, so this all applies whether you are internet-based or not.

Niche market is defined on Wikipedia as “the subset of the market on which a specific product is focusing” and is usually used to refer to something other than the mainstream market. Niche marketing just means that you have a specific target market and offer products that meet their needs. The benefits to working in a niche market is that you have one set of needs that you need to learn about, so you can quickly become an expert at understanding those needs and satisfying them. Once you’ve done that, you are a recognized name in that area.

Since this blog is mostly about network marketing and I’m with Nikken, I’m going use Nikken as an example of how network marketers can use niche marketing. Since you are probably not with Nikken, just follow along and see how you can apply it to your business.

Nikken is a wellness company that offers a wide variety of products that cover a wide variety of needs. This gives a new distributor a lot of options to choose from when picking a niche.  I’m a massage therapist, so I’m interested in pain relief and relaxation. It just so happens that Nikken has massage tools in their magnetic line, so I decide to build my first niche there and focus on telling people who want an alternative from drugs about magnets for relief from discomfort. Now I know where to focus my marketing.

New distributors also gain in that they only have a handful of products to learn about, instead of the whole catalog. Once they are established in that niche then they can pick another niche to build. For me, that’s water filtration then sleep. I don’t put a lot of attention on learning the rest of the products.

Like I said before, this doesn’t just apply to Nikken. There are a lot of companies out there that offer a wide variety of products. Shaklee is one that I am somewhat familiar with. For teams that still do the hotel meetings, this approach gives them experts who can present different aspects of different products with real authority.

So, is this something that you can use with your business?

Glimpses of Network Marketing Truth

If you have been approached about network marketing business opportunities very much, then you have heard a lot of the so-called “lies” of network marketing.  It’s easy, it isn’t selling, the products sell themselves, and so on.

I was at an in-home meeting at my upline’s house recently to listen to the top earner in my company speak about how he got started.  I’m not a big fan of in-home meetings but I’m happy to go when there will be someone that I’d like to hear speak.  Needless to say, they were surprised to see me.

Dave has been with this network marketing company for 18 or 19 years and has been with other companies before that, so he has a lot of experience with network marketing.  He has made about 40 million dollars in that time with our company, so he’s worth listening to.  Here’s what I was able to pick out from what he said.

The first thing he did was acknowledge that we do sell product and our opportunity.  It isn’t sharing and the product doesn’t sell itself.  It’s rare that you hear traditional network marketers admit that we are salespeople.  A soft sell works better than a hard sell long term.

He sells the product by demonstrating it on people.  In out meeting last night he had a hand-full of people come to the front and used a couple of our magnetic products on them to show the benefits they offer.  He also shared stories of other times that he demonstrated the product with amazing results. As you probably already know, stories sell.  He had some really good stories about using the product on people.

The last thing that really stood out to me was that you want to pick a company that has unique products with enough of a margin so that you can make some money.  In other words you don’t want to sell products or services that your customer can pick up at a store just down the road.  With products that are  common, the margin has to be very small for them to be competitive, which means you have to sell a lot more to make money.  When you get into having to sell a lot of volume it will be very difficult to compete with an actual store.

I thought the evening was well worth my time and I was glad to get some good information.  I hope it helps you in your marketing efforts.
