The social network sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and a bunch of sites that have been created on the Ning network are great places to find new prospects and leads for a home-based business. The problem I see is that most of the prospectors are just spamming everyone they meet with their product and opportunity.
I recently joined a site and my comment space was almost immediately blasted with everyone else’s opportunity. Barely a mention of common social niceties like “how are you today” or “welcome to the site”.
I don’t think it is entirely the fault of the spammer. In MLM people are taught that if you encounter a person who has a pulse then they are obligated to vomit their business opportunity all over them, which is unfortunate because the end result is that most people just get chased away.
A better, and more successful way to use the social network sites is to make friends first. Take time to find out about who they are and what they are looking for. Not everyone you meet is going to be right for your business opportunity. They might be a future customer or joint venture partner though, and you will only find that out by getting to know them first.
So, if you are a network marketer looking to use the social networks to build your business, don’t mention your business opportunity in your first contact with someone. Just welcome them, say hello, and wish them a great day. You will have more success.
