Successful Network Marketers

Have you experienced the desperate network marketer? I’m sure you have. He’s the guy who runs up to you and just dumps his spiel on you, usually before he’s even introduced himself. On Twitter she’s the one who has the automated tweet about her opportunity that posts every 15 minutes or so. When you look at her posts, all you see is an endless list of the same message over and over. If you happen to friend one of them on Facebook then they will fill you inbox.

About the only thing you can be thankful for with these people is knowing that they will never succeed the way they are going and will eventually disappear. Or maybe they will change opportunities and vomit their new business on you. Their desperation is almost overpowering.

Fortunately not all network marketers are that way, although the desperate ones may make you think they must be. From my experience, the successful network marketers are not overbearing at all. I met two of the top earners in my company last year and you couldn’t meet nicer, more easy-going people.

The important thing to remember about network marketing is that it is a real business. The problem comes from the fact that most people in network marketing have never been trained on how to run a business. They then spend their time marketing their business opportunity to more people who also have never been trained. People are brought in with promises of getting rich quick while working from home. The stories they hear are about the people who are making $100,000 a month or became overnight successes.

One of the top earners that I mentioned a moment ago shared something with me when we met. Yes, he did start making a nice amount of money right away when he joined this company. He was able to do that because he had been in several other network marketing companies before and new a lot of people who were also experienced in network marketing. While he was success immediately with this company, he wasn’t immediately successful in network marketing. It takes time to learn how build a business and build a team of people who understand what they are doing.

Like I said, network marketing is a real business and it takes time to build one. You have to get the word out that your business exists. You have to cultivate prospects, leads, customers, and new distributors. You have to learn how to talk to people. When a new distributor joins the team, they have to be properly trained and you need to make sure that they have realistic expectations. They need to know that they probably aren’t going to become an Ultra Supreme Royal Diamond Whatever on their first day, their first month, or likely during their first year.

So, to be successful in network marketing you need to understand that you are building a business, that it will take time, and be comfortable with yourself and what you are doing. Desperation shows and will drive people away. It doesn’t present success.

Response to Network Marketing Scams

You’ve seen the business opportunity offers that say “no recruiting necessary” or “we do all the work for you”. Doesn’t that sound like a “too good to be true” kind of deal? It does to me. Any time someone tells me that I can make money without doing anything I start thinking “scam”.

I was thinking about this today and I believe I know what they might be doing, at least some of them. My guess is that they are in an MLM business that has a binary compensation plan. In a binary plan you only have two legs and you get paid based on the weaker of them. If you recruit more than two people then you place them in your downline somewhere under someone else. This discourages people from stacking everyone in one leg and ignoring the other.

What these “no recruiting necessary” businesses probably do is, as they recruit people, they will build a strong leg for you, balancing out both of their legs, so that they get paid. Another problem for you is that these contacts aren’t yours and they have no loyalty to you if something happens with the business down the road. Since you aren’t doing anything to build your weak leg, or a stronger leg, you aren’t likely to make very much money, if any at all. You could start recruiting people and build out your legs, so I don’t think it is a complete scam, but the offer is definitely misleading. The ones who do the work will always be the ones who make the money.

I will make you a similar offer, with a slight difference, if you will take a look at the company I am with. Join my team, tell other people about it, then get them in touch with me. If they join, they go in your team. There are several differences with my offer. First, the company I am with, Nikken, does not have a binary compensation plan. You have a team and you make money based on your performance and theirs. You do the first step in recruiting new people by getting them interested enough to talk to me, so they are your contacts and loyal to you, not me. You also learn how to do the business because you are an active participant, not someone sitting on the sidelines. It’s a bit of on-the-job training so that eventually you won’t have to depend on me as much and can make the same offer yourself to continue building your team.

A Better Way to do Opportunity Meetings

If you are in network marketing then you were probably introduced to your business opportunity through either an in-home meeting or hotel meeting. It is the standard, old-school way to do it and your upline probably still insists that it is the best way to do it.

Personally, I think the internet is a much better way to reach a much wider audience, but in-person meetings still have their place and there is a better way to do them. Your upline will probably hate the idea, and that’s probably a good thing.

Instead of the usual, boring opportunity meeting, what if you invited people to a game night? People like to play games and don’t usually make the time in their everyday life, so it is already an appealing offer. They are fun, people get to socialize, laugh, and release stress. Inviting people to your game night is a whole lot easier because you don’t get as much rejection. The focus of your event has changed to something that your prospects are interested in and your opportunity takes a secondary focus. When people have fun and get actively engaged in an activity they are more open to what you offer afterwards.

If you have read some of my other posts then you probably know that I am a big fan of Loral Langemeier. You should be too. The game that I recommend for your game nights is Loral’s Millionaire Maker Game. The easiest way to describe it is as Monopoly on steroids. It is both fun and educational.  I recommend it as a replacement for your opportunity meetings because the entire point of the game is to build what Loral calls a Cash Machine. For the entire hour of game play your prospects are learning that building a Cash Machine is the best, fastest way for them to make money.

After the game is over, everyone is actually looking forward to hearing about your opportunity. They understand the value of having a Cash Machine, so now you can offer them one in the form of your business opportunity. It’s a beautiful thing.

There is an additional benefit to hosting a Millionaire Maker Game night as well. Have you heard of monetization, or a funded proposal? They mean that you make money while prospecting, paying for your marketing as you do it. Become an affiliate with Loral Langemeier and  you can sell her books,  CD programs, and the game itself at your game night. This gives your prospects something to take home and further get involved in the idea of building wealth, and makes you some money on the front-end to cover your costs. Now all you have to do is follow up with them.

Why People Fail in Network Marketing

Many people have tried to build a network marketing business and failed. When they do, they write off network marketing and say that it doesn’t work.

If that’s the case, then why do some people become very successful and wealthy?

I think that the biggest reason is that people treat it more like a hobby than as a business.  In a lot of cases people will get all caught up in the hype of a hotel meeting and join without really understanding what it is that they got themselves into.

So, how can you be successful in network marketing? Treat it like a real business. Create a corporate structure around the business and give your new company a name. This will give you the tax breaks that businesses get and give you more credibility when you talk to people about your product.

The next thing that you need to is create a simple business plan and revenue model. This may seem like a lot of work but it really isn’t, and it is essential to keep you on track. How much money do you need to make?  How much product do you need to sell to reach that goal?  Your business plan and revenue model help you figure that out. If you don’t know how to do this, then get Loral Langemeier‘s book, The Millionaire Maker’s Guide to Creating a Cash Machine for Life or her audio program, Building, Leading, and Protecting Your Business.  They will help you get started.

Now you are in a position to go out and learn to properly market your product and business opportunity. You also have a new language that you can use when you approach new people that you want to join you in your business. Instead of depending on hype, people will join you because you have a sound plan for growing you business.  Your new partners will be more likely to stay with you instead of dropping out because the hype wore off or running to the newest thing to come along.
